Our Learning Approach

PHILOSOPHY

Our Philosophy

We proudly recognise the Wardandi People of the Noongar Nation as the traditional custodians of the land we are on. We honour their culture and connection to Country and look for meaningful ways to include First Nations perspectives in our everyday learning.

At our centre, we believe every child is unique and deserves to feel valued, supported and confident. We create a safe and nurturing environment where children can grow, explore and build a strong sense of self. We celebrate each child’s background, personality and experiences, and encourage their natural curiosity about the world around them.

Our approach is guided by a few simple values:

  • Every child is supported as an individual, with their own interests, strengths and needs.
  • We respect and celebrate each child’s background and experiences.
  • Children learn best through play, exploration and hands-on experiences.
  • We help children build confidence and positive self-esteem.
  • Our educators lead by example, creating caring and respectful relationships with every child.
  • We provide healthy, freshly prepared meals that reflect children’s needs and cultures.
  • We take a positive, supportive approach to behaviour, helping children learn self-control and social skills.
  • We support children in understanding and managing their emotions.

Our Learning Approach

In developing our learning framework, we pay careful consideration to all elements of a child’s development so they have the opportunity to grow emotionally, physically, intellectually and socially. We take into account the complex needs and abilities of children to ensure they can flourish in their own right, as every child deserves the opportunity to discover learning at their pace. This, we have found, is the best ecosystem to allow big ideas to flourish and thrive.

Our service widely recognises the Urie Bronfenbrenner ecological system theory, where emphasis is placed on a balance between nature and nurture. Discovery at Play also promotes the Reggio Emilia Approach, which values children as strong, capable, and resilient, abundant with wonder and knowledge. These approaches are woven into our curriculum and environment by our wider team of educators.

We believe early childhood forms a foundation for the development of skills needed for life. As such, we aim to provide each and every child with the best possible stimulation, education, development and care.

How we do it

  • We tailor our program to suit each child’s age, stage and individual needs.
  • We create thoughtfully designed learning spaces that feel welcoming, engaging and inspiring.
  • We gently guide children through activities to help them feel confident and capable.
  • We encourage teamwork, friendships and positive social skills.
  • We celebrate diversity and include different cultures and perspectives in our learning.
  • We support children in exploring their interests and passions.
  • We bring nature and play into everyday learning experiences.
  • We use a variety of materials, tools and creative approaches to keep learning fun and meaningful.

Sustainability

Children learn most readily through their interactions with the environment. Discovery at Play Early Learning Centres strive to protect the environment and minimise the impact on its surroundings, while encouraging a culture that is committed to sustainable development.

As part of the children’s curriculum and our intentional teaching, we incorporate the use of natural and open-ended materials including water, sand and wood. In addition, we encourage the exploration of our natural environment both indoors and outdoors. This approach promotes an appreciation of the natural environment and enhances the child’s imagination, creativity and sense of achievement.

We also believe in educating even the youngest children about environmental and conservation issues. We do this by placing an emphasis on the use of natural and recycled materials, wise water usage, power saving, recycling, vegetable gardening, waste minimisation and adopting a positive regard and sense of responsibility for all living things.
